GreenPowerBank Dronten is a battery energy storage system (BESS) and one of three projects within the broader Dronten Energy Storage (Dronter Energie Opslag, DEO) initiative. The three systems are being built side by side in Dronten and are jointly connected to the Closed Distribution System Green (Gesloten Distributiesysteem Groen, GDG) – a private distribution network to which eight wind farms from Windplan Groen and a solar farm in Biddinghuizen are also connected.
GreenPowerBank Dronten is part of Begro Energy Projects. Ventolines has been closely involved as an integrated service provider since the development phase, supporting Begro on legal and financial matters and managing the project through to construction. We will remain involved after completion, taking on responsibility for asset management.
In its first phase, GreenPowerBank Dronten will have a storage capacity of 31.6 megawatts. The first-phase installation comprises 27 battery enclosures and is designed to store renewable energy temporarily when there is a surplus of wind or solar generation. During periods of shortfall, the stored energy is fed back into the GDG network, which in turn makes it available to the national grid. In this way, the project makes a meaningful contribution to preventing grid congestion and keeping the electricity network stable. The combined storage capacity across all three large-scale batteries within DEO is 90 megawatts.
Construction of GreenPowerBank Dronten began in September 2025, with a planned Commercial Operations Date (COD) of January 2027 – from which point the battery will be actively contributing to the energy market.
