Dispatch Amethyst

The Largest Standalone Battery Energy Storage System in the Netherlands, in Dordrecht

Client name

Dispatch B.V.

Location

Dordrecht - The Netherlands

Sector

Battery Storage

Location type

Onshore

Status

In construction

Amethyst, a project by Dispatch Grid Services, will be the largest standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Netherlands. The 45 MW/90 MWh system in Dordrecht covers a site of 6,000 square metres, and has a daily capacity to store enough energy for powering over 21,500 households.

The large-scale battery plays an important role in keeping the Dutch electricity grid stable, and supports the integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Construction is well under way, with completion expected in mid-2026.

Our Contribution

Ventolines supports Dispatch Grid Services with the development and delivery of Amethyst. Even before the financial close we were involved, helping to define the technical requirements and supporting contract negotiations. After the financial close, our team took on the role of Owner’s Engineer, responsible for quality, safety and progress during the construction phase.

We drew up the technical specifications for the Balance of Plant (BoP), integrated the battery solution into the overall project requirements, and developed maintenance strategies to ensure long-term reliability. Throughout design, construction and commissioning, we provide oversight and assess whether the system meets the required standards.

By combining technical expertise with hands-on project management, we are making sure the project is delivered efficiently, safely and future-proof. This project marks a significant step in the further development of large-scale energy storage in the Netherlands.

"A passionate, skilled team with a 'best for project' attitude."

Thijs Bosma - Head of Construction at Dispatch

Impact

The system plays a key role in balancing supply and demand on the electricity grid. When there is a surplus of renewable energy, the battery stores it temporarily and feeds it back during periods of peak demand or low generation. This is how the project contributes to a reliable, stable and efficient energy supply in the Netherlands.

Delivering on this role in the energy system requires multiple parties to work together closely. Eneco is responsible for optimising the battery’s deployment across various energy markets, whilst Equans Nederland oversees the engineering and construction of the system.
