In Asset Management

Windpark Fryslân is the largest nearshore wind farm ever built on an inland body of water. Located on the IJsselmeer, close to the Afsluitdijk, it comprises 89 wind turbines of 4.3 megawatt each. Together, the turbines have an installed capacity of 382.7 megawatt and generate approximately 1.5 terawatt-hours of electricity per year – equivalent to the consumption of around 500,000 households, or roughly 1.2% of total electricity use in the Netherlands.

Our Contribution

Ventolines guided Windpark Fryslân from the preparatory phase to successful implementation on the IJsselmeer. In an environment where nature, technology, politics, recreation and regional interests intersect, we provided direction to the process and helped make decisions that rendered the wind farm both viable and socially fitting.

Since the completion of construction, Ventolines has remained involved as asset manager. We monitor the performance of the operational wind farm, coordinate maintenance and keep a close eye on reliability and optimisation, thus ensuring that Windpark Fryslân continues to run efficiently in the long term and makes a strong contribution to sustainable energy supply in the Netherlands.

"Ventolines is a thorough and reliable partner for the asset management of Windpark Fryslân. They take responsibility for optimal operational availability and the offtake of generated electricity, and they do so in a highly professional manner."

Impact

The wind farm was built in the shape of a hexagonal cluster – a design specifically intended to minimise the visual impact on the Frisian coastline. A substation was built at Breezanddijk on the Afsluitdijk, converting the generated electricity to high voltage and transmitting it to the national grid via the Afsluitdijk.

Construction of the park was carried out by contractor consortium Zuiderzeewind, a collaboration between Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and Van Oord.

Since its completion in 2021, Windpark Fryslân has made a substantial contribution to the decarbonisation of the Dutch energy system. Alongside energy generation, a new nature and recreation area has been developed along the Afsluitdijk, enhancing the ecological value of the IJsselmeer and enriching the experience of the surrounding area.

A recurring highlight for the local community is the annual Windmill Cup, held amongst the turbines on the IJsselmeer. This event underlines the project’s connection to the region and shows that Windpark Fryslân is more than just a technical achievement.
