The transition to a sustainable energy system is well underway. An integrated approach focused on wind, solar, system integration and energy storage is accelerating the transition towards a carbon-neutral energy system.

The challenges of the energy transition are significant, but the opportunities are even greater. Innovative companies such as the Dutch company Ventolines play a crucial role in this transition. Today, successful renewable energy projects are no longer solely about adding renewable generation capacity. An important factor is ensuring that the impact of additional renewable energy on the energy system and electricity grids remains manageable.

The role of wind and solar

Wind and solar energy form key pillars of Ventolines’ strategy. The company has been closely involved in projects such as Windplan Groen, the largest onshore wind project in the Netherlands. With 86 wind turbines, the project is capable of generating 1.8 terawatt hours of renewable electricity annually, accounting for more than 5% of the national target for onshore renewable electricity generation by 2030.

In addition, Ventolines has applied its expertise to Windpark Fryslân, the largest wind farm located in a lake anywhere in the world. “These projects demonstrate both our experience and our ambition to contribute to a future-proof energy system,” says Rens Savenije.

To date, Ventolines has supported its clients in the realisation of more than 2 gigawatts of installed wind and solar capacity and manages an asset management portfolio of 1.5 gigawatts. In addition, the company is increasingly involved in energy storage and system integration projects and is expanding its focus internationally towards several promising markets, including the Baltic Sea region, Ireland and the United States.

 

Energy storage as the key to flexibility

Energy storage is an essential component of the energy transition. As wind and solar energy continue to grow, balancing electricity supply and demand becomes an increasing challenge. This is driving the rapid growth of battery storage projects, which store electricity during periods of excess generation and make it available when supply is lower.

In the Noordoostpolder region, Ventolines is supporting a client in the development of the Netherlands’ largest battery storage project, Energieopslag Westermeerdijk, with a storage capacity of one gigawatt hour. Construction of the project is scheduled to start in 2025.

“Batteries not only provide the flexibility required for the energy system of the future, but also contribute to reducing grid congestion and making optimal use of grid capacity,” explains Rens Savenije. According to him, batteries will continue to play an increasingly important role.

System integration: the way forward

One of the greatest challenges of the energy transition is making optimal use of the electricity grid. System integration offers solutions to this challenge, and Ventolines has experience in developing and implementing innovative solutions in this field. Concepts such as cable pooling, in which multiple renewable energy projects share a single grid connection, and closed distribution systems, where several projects collaborate through a private network to ultimately create a single connection to the high-voltage grid, make renewable energy projects more efficient and economically viable.

“The generation peaks of wind and solar energy rarely occur at the same time, allowing a shared grid connection to be used more efficiently. Innovations like these not only increase renewable energy generation, but also accelerate the transition,” explains Rens Savenije.

Ventolines places a strong focus on collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders. Local communities, governments, grid operators, project developers and investors are actively involved to ensure projects are successful.

“With complex projects such as Windplan Groen or Energieopslag Westermeerdijk, success depends on collaboration. Without the support of the local community and careful planning, projects of this scale would not be possible,” says Rens Savenije.

This is especially important in today’s environment, where renewable energy projects can sometimes face resistance. “Thanks to our integrated approach, we are able to establish clear agreements with all stakeholders and ensure that everyone feels heard. That is what makes the difference between success and failure,” adds Rens Savenije.

Optimistic about the future

Despite the challenges, Rens Savenije remains optimistic about the future of the energy transition.

“We are at a turning point. The cost of renewable energy continues to decline, making investment increasingly attractive. For many companies and consumers, sustainability is now not only a moral choice, but also an economic one,” he explains.

At the same time, technological developments are accelerating rapidly. Innovations in batteries, solar energy and system integration are making renewable energy more efficient and accessible than ever before.

“We have already taken major steps, and this is only the beginning. In the coming years, we will see exponential growth in renewable energy projects worldwide.”
